SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and Marine Corps Community Services Miramar canceled the 2021 Miramar Air Show Thursday due to the continuing public health risks associated with COVID-19.
The Miramar Air Show is the largest military air show in the world and typically one of the largest single public events in San Diego, drawing in upwards of half a million guests and spectators from around the globe every year.
Due to uncertainty surrounding the spread of coronavirus across our communities, Col. Charles Dockery, commanding officer of MCAS Miramar, made the decision to suspend this fall’s scheduled event and look to begin the early planning for a show in 2022.

Citing public health risks, the Marines announced Thursday the annual Miramar Air Show is again being canceled this year.
Col. Charles Dockery, the commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, said the decision was made based on safety and public health.
“MCAS Miramar has always prioritized our community’s safety throughout the pandemic, beginning the moment we hosted evacuees from Wuhan to our daily operations delivering National Defense, and this decision is no different,” Dockery said in a statement. “It remains the right choice to look ahead to 2022 and make it better than ever.”
Dockery’s statement echoes one he made in June 2020 when the Marines announced the air show’s cancellation, when he also said it remained a “prudent choice to look ahead to 2021 and make it better than ever.”

A new 5G tower installed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in July 2020
ALBUQUERQUE: When Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam fully incorporates 5G, it should speed preemptive maintenance and improve the readiness of aircraft at the base to more than 80 percent, James Beutel, the Air Force’s deputy chief technology officer said today. Beutel spoke at AFCEA DC’s 5G Defense Summit, where he was joined by leaders from the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps who all stressed the transformative nature of having 5G on bases.
With 5G in place, and the force able to use it effectively, it may drive everything from endpoint data processing to better resilience of command and control in the event of kinetic attacks.
