Members of the Racine Corps stand frozen on the Iwo Jima Fourth of July float. Submitted
RACINE â Marine Corps League, Agerholm-Gross Detachment 346 will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the âLiving Memorialâ Iwo Jima Flag-Raising tribute float this Fourth of July.
One year after Joe Rosenthalâs iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of the raising of the flag on Mount Surabachi, the local group of Marine Veterans memorialized the event with the Iwo Jima float in Racineâs Fourth of July parade.
The flag-raising photograph became the most viewed photo in the history of the world. It stood for the dedication, valor and sacrifices of America to protect the freedoms and pursuit of democracy across the globe. It was later cast in bronze by sculptor Felix de Weldon; that statue still stands today in Arlington.

Racine County is expecting to receive millions of dollars to fund opioid treatment and prevention programing through the settlement of a lawsuit against drug manufacturers, under a bill passed by the Wisconsin Legislature and signed by Gov. Tony Evers on Wednesday.
Although he called some aspects of the bill unconstitutional, Evers signed a bill that will provide the bulk of the cash coming to Wisconsin as part of the settlement to county governments, including Kenosha and Racine counties.
Evers
Evers stated that he signed the bill âbecause it will help bring much-needed funds to communities throughout Wisconsin to address the opioid pandemic through a settlement with opioid manufacturers and distributors.â
