NIMASA, MWUN, NJIC begin negotiations of dockworkers pay increase -

By Godwin Oritse THE Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, National Joint Industrial Council, NJIC, alongside other stakeholders in the maritime labour industry have commenced negotiations of the increment of dockworkers’ wages and entitlements. Vanguard Maritime Report learnt that series of meetings have been held before as the negotiation on the issue was still ongoing at the time of filling this report. Confirming the development, Comrade Abdullahi Eroje, said that the negotiation is ongoing adding that most of the stakeholders that were supposed to meet travelled abroad and that as soon as they are back, the negotiations will continue. Eroje also said that the moment all the parties involved in the negotiation are around another meeting will be called.

Unionists laud association for securing salary increment, boosting welfare of seafarers

Members of the Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNOWTSSA) have applauded its National President, Bob Yousou and executives for the Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) for improved welfare packages that ensure Nigerian Seafarers are paid in line with the international best practice.        The union stated this while taking stock of achievements of the present executives led by Yousou as they clocked one year in office.   The members also applauded the leadership for engaging employers of labour on increment of workers’ salaries and securing the union’s membership in International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) for effective representation.

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) chapter of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has again charged the Federal Government to dredge the Warri and Calabar seaports to create jobs and check youth restiveness in the Niger Delta region. Its President, Comrade Ifeanyi Mazeli gave charge during a chat with journalists in Lagos. Mazeli noted that the seaports in Warri, Delta State and Calabar, Cross River State were capable of creating millions of direct and indirect jobs for young people in the region. He said youth restiveness and militancy were increasing in region due to lack of engagement by the states and Federal governments, adding that the maritime sector could provide the needed employment for the youths if properly harnessed.

MWUN: Shipping branch endorses Adeyanju for re-election

Share The Shipping, Clearing & Forwarding Agencies Branch, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), has passed a vote of confidence in the re-election bid of the incumbent President-General of the union, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju. The Branch President, Comrade Ekpenyong Etim Ekpenyong who extolled the virtues of Adeyanju, disclosed this recently in a chat with newsmen in Lagos. Recall that the first tenure of the incumbent President General and other national executive officers is expected to end in March 2021, even as elections will come up before the end of the first quarter of the year. Adeyanju was elected in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State within the same period in the election that held on March 17, 2017 which was keenly contested.

Maritime workers union decries unpaid benefits to ex-NNSL workers On By Victor Ahiuma-Young Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, has decried the protracted delay in the payment of pensions and terminal benefits to the former employees of the defunct Nigerian National Shipping Line, NNSL, lamenting that the affected ex-NNSL staff have been going through untold hardships leading to untimely deaths. In a communique issued at the end of its National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Lagos, President-General of the Union, Prince Adeyanju Adewale, among others, lamented that it appeared the agency of the Federal Government responsible for the payment of pensions and terminal benefits of the affected senior citizens had abandoned them to suffer and die.
