NPA to commence automated call-up system Jan 2021 On By Godfrey Bivbere THE Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, has said that it will deploy the much expected automated call-up system of trucks into the Apapa ports in Lagos to curb the problematic traffic congestions along the port corridors by next month. This is even as shippers have charged the contractors working on the port access roads to carry out palliative works on the failed portions of the roads between Berger-yard Bus Stop and Berger Suya Bus Stop, outward Tin-can Island port. The deployment of the automated call-up system is part of the measures aimed at resolving the traffic gridlock that has threatened to ground port operations at Tin-can port.

Daily Trust had reported last week that the cost of doing business especially for the importation of goods through this same port had risen to N600,000 from N300,000 in 2019. Some of the truckers who spoke to this paper blamed the hike on the continuous by suspected touts allegedly security agents along the port route. It was also learnt that if the situation is unchecked, the freight cost could rise to over N2m before the year ends. About 40 ships calling at the TCIP are said to be stranded at anchorage due to lack of space to discharge new cargoes at terminals in the port. This is because cargo evacuation has been hampered by the multiple toll points mounted by security operatives and taskforce members.

Shipping firms risk sanction over movement of empty containers -

By Godwin Oritse THE Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, has warned shipping firms in Nigeria against not allowing empty containers into their holding bays, saying that such action would attract sanctions henceforth. In a statement signed by Ibrahim Nasiru, Assistant General Manager, Corporate  and  Strategic   Communications department of the NPA, management also warned shipping firms to ensure that the size of their respective empty container holding bay is commensurate with the volume of containers they bring into the ports, in line with NPA policy on empty containers. Recall that the NPA, in a bid to avert an industrial action called by the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, and clear the port access roads of every encumbrances, appealed to  members of the union to shelve the three days planned strike to enable the agency workout an efficient cargo delivery system.
