Ocean City-Wright firefighters mourn retired captain killed in crash

“At that point they weren’t totally sure of his condition and that’s how we found out,” said Ocean City-Wright Deputy Chief Jeff Wagner. “Those guys were great. They stood on scene and just kind of honored him, guarding his body until we could get down there.”  The Ocean City-Wright firefighters got to the scene, sat down and told old stories about their time with Powell while waiting for the coroner to arrive and take him to Pensacola for an autopsy.  You re family up here Powell was 56 years old and had been retired from the department for about four years, after dedicating almost 30 years of his life to the profession. Not too many of his colleagues still work at the department, but those who do remember him well. 

West Marine fire at Uptown Station in Fort Walton Beach contained

The Fort Walton Beach Fire Department was assisted by the Ocean City-Wright Fire Control District and Okaloosa Island Fire Department.  Early detection of the fire and a quick response reportedly played a substantial role in mitigating damage to the business. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to a small section outside of the building and used a ladder to ensure the fire had not spread to the roof. 

Fort Walton Beach, Florida mobile home destroyed in fire

Northwest Florida Daily News/USA TODAY NETWORK FORT WALTON BEACH A mobile home on Racetrack Road was destroyed in a fire Wednesday night, according to an Ocean City-Wright Fire Control District post on Facebook. The blaze was reported at a residence in the Pinecrest Mobile Home Park at 441 Racetrack Road N.W. Engine 1, Squad 1, Engine 3, Engine 11, Fort Walton Beach Fire Department Engine 7, Battalion 1, and Battalion 6 responded to the fire and made a fast attack to protect threatened structures nearby. There were no reported injuries in the fire, and none of the surrounding structures was damaged. Firefighters were assisted on scene by the Okaloosa County Sheriff s Office and EMS.
