Minister says good environmental planning practice essential for all marine projects

Minister says good environmental planning practice essential for all marine projects Environmentalist warns scale-up of Ireland’s offshore wind resources could be undone by lack of public engagement Thu, May 6, 2021, 22:18 The Minister for the Environment and Climate Eamon Ryan said the rapid rollout of offshore wind energy would be contentious, particularly off the east coast because large turbines would be so visible on the horizon. Photograph: Getty Images   Ireland’s energy transition and rollout of large-scale offshore wind must be seen as “a shared societal project, rather than a developer-led project”, the environmentalist Oisín Coghlan has warned. Offering practical advice to those supporting necessary development of offshore renewable energy, the director of Friends of the Earth said the absence of public engagement – including public participation and public ownership – meant building infrastructure risked being more difficult for the State and for d

The Irish Times view on Ireland s emissions cuts

There are welcome signs that parts of the Irish economy are finally on a course of sustained decarbonisation in the latest emissions report published by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Total emissions in the power generating sector and major industrial companies, which are part of the EU emissions trading system, fell by 6.4 per cent in 2020 to their lowest level since it was introduced in 2005, resulting in a reduction of 0.9 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. The electricity sector was the star performer. Its emissions dropped by 8.4 per cent as a result of the strong presence of renewable energy – mainly wind – and less use of fossil fuels such as peat, in Ireland’s energy mix. The outlier was Moneypoint, although the ESB has announced an ambitious plan to convert the coal-burning power plant into a renewables hub, tied into scaling up offshore wind energy and going into hydrogen production.

Onshore wind key to climate targets and jobs, says KPMG report

Onshore wind key to climate targets and jobs, says KPMG report Sector supports 5,000 jobs now and this will rise to 7,000 by 2030, according to dispatch about 9 hours ago Minister for Climate Eamon Ryan: ‘Now is the time to go offshore at scale and at speed.’   Developing wind energy onshore will be critical to meeting Ireland’s climate targets, and result in an additional 4,000 megawatts of power while employing 7,000 people by 2030, according to a KPMG report. Delivering the onshore wind energy target in the Government’s climate action plan will almost double capacity from that source, generate €2.7 billion of investment over the next decade and could be worth €550 million annually to the economy at that point, the report for Wind Energy Ireland (WEI) concludes – it was released on Thursday at its annual annual conference.
