Congestion Worsens at Southern California Ports

Congestion Worsens at Southern California Ports A containership unloaded at the Port of Los Angeles. (Patrick T. Fallon/Bloomberg News) Ship congestion around the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach hit an unprecedented level, worsening the bottleneck at the busiest gateway for U.S. imports. A record 38 containerships are awaiting berth space 36 at anchor and two that were directed to wait in designated areas at sea until anchorages are available, the Marine Exchange of Southern California said in a note late Jan. 28. It’s the first time since 2004 that so-called drift zones have been used to manage traffic into the neighboring ports.

Spread the love ASIA: China has warned Taiwan that any attempt to seek independence “means war.” The warning comes days after China stepped up its military activities and flew warplanes near the island. This reaction from China came after new US President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to Taiwan, and set out his stance in Asia. The US has called China’s latest warning “unfortunate”, adding that tensions did not need to lead to “anything like confrontation.” China sees democratic Taiwan as a breakaway province, but Taiwan sees itself as a sovereign state, with its own constitution, military, and elected leaders.

Anchored Containerships Off Los Angeles/Long Beach Flee Winter Storm – gCaptain

By Brendan Murray (Bloomberg) Cargo ships enduring one of the worst U.S. port bottlenecks in more than a decade faced down another obstacle as they waited to offload near Los Angeles: a lashing from Mother Nature. Winds gusting to 55 knots (63 mph) and 17-foot (5.2-meter) waves forced 17 loaded container vessels to depart their anchorages for safety out at sea, the Marine Exchange of Southern California said in a note late Monday. Another 14 carriers remained anchored outside the adjacent ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, it said. The storm prevented “many” scheduled port movements, and marine officials indicated that the congestion doesn’t look likely to clear soon: 28 additional container lines are scheduled to arrive in the next three days 11 more than the usual pre-Covid traffic.
