FISHERMEN ADVISED TO KEEP UPDATED ON WEATHER BULLETIN 15/12/2020 The Ministry of Fisheries is advising fisherfolk and licensed fishers around the country to refrain from traveling out to sea for the next few days and keep listening to updated weather bulletins.   Director Fisheries, Ms Mere Lakeba says that fishers will need to secure their assets like boats and engines as well as fishing gear.   Villages that were assisted with solar freezers are advised to remove solar panels from the rooftops and properly secure them in a safe place.   “This is a precautionary measure and we trust that the Fishermen’s associations in villages and communities will be able to work together to ensure that all assets are properly stored away,” said Ms Lakeba.

The Patterson Shipping Company will cease operation on Thursday. This as the threat of Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa on Friday 18th December 2020. According to the weather office, severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa is expected to intensify to a category five in its projected path. The weather office has projected that the storm will intensify to a category five cyclone just north of Rotuma on Thursday. Patterson Shipping Company director David Patterson said they will cease operation until they have been given all cleared by authorities as their customers safety is a priority. Patterson in an interview said they will continue to monitor the weather accordingly and will update customers on when services will resume.

MSAF is also calling on small boat owners to take necessary precautionary measures to ensure their boats are safe and to avoid any non-essential travel until it is safe to do so.
