The Maritime Administration announced the availability of $10.8 million in grant funding for the America’s Marine Highway Program (AMHP), whose purpose is to encourage the use of America’s 25,000 miles of navigable waterways.  “The America’s Marine Highway Program increases the use of environmentally sustainable practices to move freight across our transportation system,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. “These investments help local communities reduce congestion and create more economic opportunities.” Acting Maritime Administrator Lucinda Lessley said AMHP provides essential funding to support the expanded movement of freight by water, while also supporting port communities on the coasts and inland waterways.

May 7, 2021 By Jim Myers Washington, D.C. A review panel has been conducted on the Inland Waterways Users Board (IWUB), possibly a key step in returning the suspended board to active status. That zero-based review of the IWUB and other Department of Defense advisory committees was directed by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin three months ago. In the same January 30 memorandum to senior Pentagon leadership and others, Austin also directed the immediate suspension of all advisory committee operations until the review was completed unless directed by him or his deputy defense secretary. Austin also used his memo to acknowledge the important role advisory committees play in shaping department policies, but added the review will focus their efforts “to align with our most pressing strategic priorities and the National Defense Strategy.”

Masking requirement on commercial fishing boats draws ire of Alaska senators and state officials Print article The federal mask requirement for all people aboard fishing vessels still stands, and Alaska’s U.S. senators are adding their clout to have it removed. A Coast Guard a Marine Safety Information Bulletin issued March 22 states its authority to restrict vessel access to ports and operations if they fail to follow the rules as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “Vessels that have not implemented the mask requirement may be issued a Captain of the Port order directing the vessel’s movement and operations; repeated failure to impose the mask mandate could result in civil and/or criminal enforcement action,” the bulletin says.
