Despite missing permit, La Jolla fireworks may shoot off from new location

La Jolla  Fireworks won’t be launched from Ellen Browning Scripps Park this Fourth of July, but city officials are still working with organizers to find another location for the La Jolla pyrotechnic show to light up the sky. The long-running annual event has been on hiatus since 2017 after organizers struggled to pay for the expensive display. The event was canceled last year because of the pandemic and the countywide stay-home orders. Still, event organizers from the La Jolla Community Fireworks Foundation were confident the show would resume now that those orders had been lifted. But that confidence was shaken this week when the city announced that organizers failed to obtain a necessary permit.

La Jolla fireworks organizers say they re not ready to give up on plans for July 4 show

The city of San Diego says it is willing to work with organizers on ‘alternative celebration ideas.’ “We’ve had these fireworks for 33 of the last 36 years and never been required to get a coastal development permit,” McGrory contended. “We are evaluating all the alternatives,” McGrory said, including moving the fireworks to La Jolla Shores, though he said it wasn’t clear whether a coastal development permit would be required there as well. According to the city’s municipal code, temporary events like the La Jolla fireworks show can be deemed exempt from obtaining a coastal development permit. However, according to the code, there are situations that could disqualify an event from exemption, including if the city determines the event “has the potential to adversely affect . environmentally sensitive lands.”

Fireworks fizzle? California Coastal Commission says Fourth show should be moved away from La Jolla Cove

Print Citing potential disturbance of sea lions at Point La Jolla and a failure of organizers to secure needed permits in time, the California Coastal Commission said June 30 that La Jolla’s planned Fourth of July fireworks display should be moved from La Jolla Cove. It remains to be seen whether the show will take place at another location four days from now. Dave Rolland, senior advisor of communications for San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, confirmed to the La Jolla Light that the show would not be permitted to go on as planned, with fireworks launched from near The Cove.
