Medway Council s Severe Weather Emergency Protocol in place for Christmas period  |  An emergency initiative has been launched to help rough sleepers over the festive period. Medway Council s Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) is now in place until December 29. Rough sleepers will be offered shelter over the festive period. Stock picture Emergency action to protect the homeless is taken when it is forecast to go to zero Celsius or below for three consecutive nights. Accommodation is being provided for rough sleepers in Medway in addition to the housing options it has for homeless people throughout the year. Its housing team and partner agencies in the Homelessness Forum hope to spread the message to as many rough sleepers as possible to get them off the streets and into the warm.

Virus forces homeless shelter to replace Xmas sit down meals with takeaways Pic: 999 Club Local homeless support charity , the 999 Club, has been forced by the pandemic to be offering hot takeaways to homeless people this Christmas, rather than a sit down meal within their centres. Ezra Odigie, a project worker at the Deptford-based 999 Club, spoke to Eastlondonlines about the support the work they plan to do over Christmas. Odigie told ELL that the club were initially worried that they would not be able to provide takeaways due to the number of Coronavirus cases. As a project worker, Odigie works in homelessness prevention, which includes rehousing rough sleepers or people in secure housing, assisting with benefits, as well as referrals to other agencies.
