TOKYO – The largest Navy base in Japan announced Tuesday that another 32 people have become infected with the coronavirus since Friday, adding to the installation’s worst outbreak since the pandemic began. Yokosuka Naval Base, homeport for the U.S. 7th Fleet, so far in this month has reported 269 infections, nearly twice the numbers in December, the next highest month, when it announced 144 cases.

Japan considers wider coronavirus emergency; US naval base cluster grows

. TOKYO The U.S. military in Japan reported 66 new coronavirus infections as of 6 p.m. Tuesday as the Japanese government prepared to expand a state of emergency to three more of its largest cities. Yokosuka Naval Base, 35 miles south of Tokyo, said 41 people had tested positive for the coronavirus since Friday, according to a Facebook post. The naval base is monitoring 127 individuals with the virus. All four Defense Department schools at the base will close Wednesday and Thursday following “recent positive cases” there, according to a message to families and staff from Ronald Knight Jr., the community superintendent for Department of Defense Education Activity Pacific East District. Schools will reopen Tuesday after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

US military in Japan counts 57 new coronavirus cases as end of 2020 nears

. TOKYO –  Three U.S. military bases in Japan reported 57 new coronavirus cases as of 6 p.m. Wednesday as the year staggered to a close. December has emerged as Japan’s worst month of the pandemic, far surpassing the country s previous records for new infections and deaths. A record high 1,110 people have died in Japan so far this month, according to Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, and a record 74,824 new infections were identified. In Tokyo, the virus produced another 944 newly infected people Wednesday, five shy of the city’s pandemic daily record of 949 set Saturday, according to public broadcaster NHK. Nearly 800 people per day in the city of 13.5 million have tested positive during the final week of December, according to Tokyo Metropolitan Government data.

TOKYO The U.S. military in Japan and South Korea reported another 32 cases of coronavirus as of 6 p.m. Tuesday, while both countries continued to report some of their highest daily numbers. In Seoul, the South Korean Central Disease Control Headquarters reported 869 new cases across the country on Monday, ending a five-day run of more than 1,000 new cases per day.
