PETALING JAYA: It is more important for businesses to get appropriate and timely approval as essential services rather than the number which get it, say shopping mall owners and retailers.
In a joint statement, the Shopping Malls Association, Malaysia Retailers Association, Malaysia Retail Chain Association and Bumiputra Retailers Organisation said that the recent controversy over the number of businesses that have been issued approval letters was not the issue.
They said that the government must ensure that all essential service businesses and their chain of supporting activities have their operating approvals expedited in order to save livelihoods . The sole criterion is whether those allowed to operate have correctly and expeditiously been issued with the requisite permits to do so. The absolute number is irrelevant, said the associations in a statement on Sunday (June 6).

PETALING JAYA: Malls are safe places to visit and its owners should not be penalised for actions of others that are beyond their control, say retail associations.
This comes after Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba was quoted as saying that several shopping malls would be listed under the Hotspot Identification for Dynamic Engagement (HIDE) system after it was found that they were used for family gatherings during the recent Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
He said his ministry had identified the malls in question and placed them on the HIDE list in an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19.
PETALING JAYA: A list of potential Covid-19 hotspots will be published by the government starting today, as the movement control order is reimposed in certain states.
The Health Ministry is expected to reveal the Hotspots Identification for Dynamic Engagement (HIDE) system and the list of potential hotspots that it predicts.
Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said more information would be revealed today.
While Malaysians are glad for the system, businesses are worried that such a list will incite fear and panic.
Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) president Datuk Dr Marimuthu Nadason said it’s a good move to have the system in place.
