Use mall space for faster vaccination, owners tell Government

A leading association of shopping mall operators has written to state governments to utilise mall infrastructure across the country to organise vaccination camps to help accelerate the vaccination drive that has opened for 18-plus citizens from May 1.

“This move will help accelerate the government’s efforts in carry out such an exercise that will eventually benefit the larger cause of ‘Break the chain.’ Malls are social infrastructure with ample safe and hygienic parking space, training rooms and can be utilized as vaccination camps,” SCAI said in a statement.

Shopping malls, which are currently shut in a majority of places because of localised lockdowns, on Friday offered to double up as vaccination centres to accelerate government efforts at giving jabs to all the people. In a statement, the Shopping Centres Association of India (SCAI) said the civic body of the satellite city of Navi Mumbai has decided to conduct drive-through vaccination drive at one of the malls under its jurisdiction and pitched for an emulation of the same.

In a bit to complement the government’s efforts to speed up inoculation of eligible citizens, the Shopping Centres Association of India (SCAI) has urged state governments across the country to use shopping centres or malls to carry out vaccination drives.
The industry body said it firmly believes this move will help accelerate the government’s efforts and eventually help in breaking the chain of the virus. Malls are social infrastructure with ample safe and hygienic parking space, training rooms, etc., and can be utilised as vaccination camps, it added.
Since the last quarter of 2020, malls and shopping centres had started witnessing a gradual recovery in footfalls and consumption after a phased reopening across states.
