Give us a year before enforcing new worker housing laws, builders groups urge Government

PETALING JAYA: Construction industry players are appealing to the Government for a one-year grace period before enforcing new laws on standard housing for their workers. They said the latest amendments to the Employees’ Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446) need time for compliance. “While we commend the initiative to provide a conducive living space for workers, the amendments to Act 446 which were gazetted on Feb 17,2021, as part of the Emergency Ordinance took place at a rather (inopportune) time while taking into account the unfavourable economic situation, they said in a joint statement on Thursday (Feb 25). “The rising of construction costs and standard operating procedure compliance costs have caused cash flow problems and financial constraints for contractors.

1,161 employers in Melaka have not screened 14,016 foreign workers for COVID-19

Bernama MELAKA, Feb 23: A total of 1,161 employers in Melaka hiring foreign workers have not conducted COVID-19 screening on 14,016 of these workers within the period from Feb 1 until yesterday. Melaka Manpower Department (JTK) director, Rosli Jantan said these employers had been contacted via email but had yet to respond on the screening matter. “The department had contacted 2,208 employers registered under the Social Security Organisation (Socso) but only 1,047 of them gave feedback and conducted screening for their foreign workers within that period. “So far, only 27,496 foreign workers have undergone screening and we urge the employers who have not done it for their foreign workers to do so immediately to avoid action against them,“ he told reporters after an integrated operation conducted by the

Tuju Setia gets SC nod to list on Main Market of Bursa Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 18): Construction services company Tuju Setia Bhd has received approval from the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) to list on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd. In a statement today, Tuju Setia said through its proposed wholly-owned subsidiary Pembinaan Tuju Setia Sdn Bhd (PTS), the firm is involved in the provision of construction services as a main contractor, with experience in commercial, residential, and institutional buildings mainly in Klang Valley. It added that PTS has core expertise in the construction of high-rise buildings. Tuju Setia said notable non-residential projects completed include Setia Walk, Setia Sky Residences (Celeste & Divina Tower), TWY Mont Kiara, Geo Bukit Rimau, Top Glove Corporate Office Tower, Menara TCM, and St Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia (previously Tropicana International School).
