Central Saint Martins graduate Irene Roca Moracia has created a collection of modular furniture using discarded building materials, as a way of critiquing the wastefulness of the construction industry.
The system, called Appropriating the Grid, consists of 11 building blocks that can be combined and joined with metal clips to serve a range of different functions, from seating to storage.

To create the units, surplus reinforcement mesh is welded and cold patinated by hand to form a frame, which is then topped with different types of cement and sand that were thrown away because their packaging had torn while being transported to the site.
UK housing ministry approves Basec for CPR testing
, January 7, 2021 The UK’s Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has designated Basec, a testing and certification partner to the worldwide cable industry, as an approved body for UK Construction Products Regulation (CPR) testing as of December 31, 2020. Following the Brexit trade agreements, the question has arisen surrounding mutual recognition agreement off conformity assessments between the EU and UK testing and certification bodies around CPR. According to a spokesman for Basec: “The agreement that was reached with the EU at the end of 2020 did not include a provision, which would allow for mutual recognition of conformity assessment.
