HEALTH SURVEILLANCE STAFF were urged to slow down the number of Covid-19 cases they were inputting into the HPSC’s data-reporting system after a computer glitch slowed the official reporting of cases after Christmas, newly released emails show.

The Department of Public Health Mid-West is urging people in Clare to hold firm in staying at home and complying with public health guidelines, as a sign of solidarity with the region’s healthcare workers who are on the COVID-19 pandemic frontline.
There have been more than 1,600 COVID-19 cases reported in the past seven days, and more than 5,200 in the past 14 days across the Mid-West region. Over the past 14 days, there have been more than 3,100 cases recorded in Limerick, over 1,500 in Clare, and over 600 in North Tipperary.
While we are seeing a slight decrease in daily infection numbers, COVID-19 remains widespread in our community, and it continues to present a high risk for the vulnerable population, particularly those in nursing homes and long-term care facilities.

Towards the end of last week, the HSE said that over 13,000 doses had been administered.
Vaccine supplies are an issue. Yesterday, the European Commission extended its contract to purchase another 300 million doses of the Pfizer-BionTech vaccine. This will double the EU order, but the second batch will not begin to be available until the second half of the year. There have been many questions this week as to whether the Commission bought too few vaccines in its first order.
Here, people want vaccination to be a military-style process, utilising the best of the public and private sector. As of now, GPs and pharmacists are not involved, but they are due to be at a later stage.

HEALTH OFFICIALS HAVE today confirmed an additional 3,394 cases of Covid-19 in Ireland.
In a statement, the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) have also confirmed 4 more deaths from Covid-19.
This brings the death toll to 2,252, with a total of 96,926 cases of Covid-19 being reported in Ireland since the pandemic began.
Of the cases notified today:
1,619 are men / 1,766 are women
