Virtual learning, mandatory masks on the way out for KISD students

In-person classes will be the only option provided by Killeen ISD for students this upcoming school year. “From an economy of scale standpoint, I just don’t think we’re going to be able to provide the virtual learning platform without really disrupting the face-to-face environment as a modality of instruction,” Craft said during Tuesday’s workshop meeting. During a registration drive in March, the district gauged interest in virtual learning for the 2021-2022 school year. The district received 855 requests for virtual learning out of the 18,000 students eligible to participate in the virtual platform, Craft said. For those parents still looking for a virtual learning option, Craft suggested they look into the Texas Education Agency’s virtual platform: Texas Virtual School Network.

KISD board approves Teacher of the Year prize payments

The Killeen Independent School District board of trustees approved an increase to Teacher of the Year prize payments at the regular school board meeting Tuesday evening. For the past decade, KISD has participated in the Texas State Teacher of the Year program which awards Teacher of the Year honorees with a monetary gift annually. This year, the district is retroactively awarding prizes to the 2019-2020 Teachers of the Year. “We want to celebrate our teachers’ success,” KISD Superintendent John Craft said. Tuesday, the KISD school board unanimously voted 6-0 to more than double the Teacher of the Year winners’ checks from $2,000 to $5,000. Board member Shelley Wells was absent Tuesday and unable to vote.

KISD announces six new principals

Saegert Elementary Assistant Principal Becky Whitelow will become the newest principal of Brookhaven Elementary this fall. “Her natural ability to lead is easily recognized by all who come in contact with her,” the district said of Whitelow in a press release. Whitelow, a military combat veteran, began her KISD career as a first-grade teacher at Sugar Loaf Elementary. Whitelow will replace outgoing principal Iris Felder who was recently promoted to KISD executive director of elementary schools. Cedar Valley Elementary Assistant Principal Jessica Napolez will become the school’s newest principal for the 2021-2022 school year. Napolez began her KISD career teaching at Iduma and Hay Branch elementary schools.

KISD board approves updated school calendar

The Killeen Independent School District board of trustees amended the 2020-2021 school calendar Tuesday to make up for time lost due to recent winter storm closures. A total of eight calendar days were adjusted during Tuesday’s board meeting. “Early Out” dates Feb. 26, March 5, March 12, April 16, and April 30 will now be regular school days, according to the updated calendar. April 2, originally Good Friday holiday, will now be a remote learning day for students and a planning day for teachers. March 22 and April 12, originally scheduled to be teacher planning days, will now be remote learning days for students as well. The amended 2020-2021 school calendar, including eight adjusted school days, passed with a 6-1 vote from the board. Board Vice President Susan Jones was the only member to vote in opposition of the amended calendar.
