POLICE and politicians in Northern Ireland appealed for calm today following three nights of violent unrest.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) reported that officers were attacked in Derry on Sunday night and that there were riots in unionist areas near Belfast. Unionist teenagers set police cars alight and threw petrol bombs and projectiles at police on Friday and Saturday nights as well.
Twenty-seven officers have been injured and eight people have so far been charged, the youngest a boy of 13.
Chief Superintendent Darrin Jones condemned the “senseless and reckless criminal behavior that [does] nothing but cause damage to the community.”
