Daniel Davis is starting a spell behind bars after the assault last month. It happened on January 15 when Davis, 38, was arrested on suspicion of road related offences. He was taken into custody where he attempted to relieve himself on the floor and began to threaten officers and staff. It was in the police cells during a routine check that he claimed to have coronavirus before spitting through the hatch at a detention officer. He was charged with assault of an emergency worker and pleaded guilty when he appeared before magistrates last month. Davis, of Wheatfields Court, Eastfield, Scarborough, was jailed for 22 weeks.

The numbers, published today by the the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC), reveal that a total of 2,600 Covid fixed penalty notices were issued across the Durham, Cleveland and North Yorkshire force areas between March 27 and January 17. This period covers all the national lockdowns and tier restrictions imposed by the Government since the start of the pandemic. North Yorkshire Police accounts for the vast majority of fines issued in the region, with 1,963 handed out.
