Del. Reid Novotny said he introduced legislation Wednesday in the General Assembly to strip student school board members in Maryland of their vote if it is a “deciding vote” on a motion.
The Howard County Public School System on Tuesday once again delayed the return of its in-person small group programs due to the county’s “continued unfavorable COVID-19 rates,” according to a news release.
Faced with questions from parents about why their students remain learning virtually while Carroll County Public Schools restarted its hybrid learning model last week, officials in nearby Howard and Harford counties questioned the wisdom of Carroll’s school board’s decision-making.
Howard school system Superintendent Michael Martirano said the district’s plan is for the limited in-person small group support that was being provided in the fall to restart Feb. 1. Then, on April 14, the rolling out of a hybrid model for the general student population could begin, subject to board approval.
The Howard County Board of Education unanimously approved the school system’s proposed 2021-22 academic calendar during its meeting Thursday, and the first day of school will be Aug. 30, 2021.
