In a report published ahead of the meeting, council bosses said: “Whilst there is evident support from the many residents and visitors for ‘pedestrianisation’ in Bedford Place, who have enjoyed the traffic free environment and ‘café culture’ on-street, there are a significant number of objections from residents living in the immediate vicinity and a lack of majority support from the Bedford Place businesses. The objections raise several business, safety, accessibility and anti-social issues.” The report concludes that “there is no clear overall view from the formal and informal consultation activities”. It comes as according to the official document the overall responses to an initial consultation were in favour of the temporary road closure but there were also “pockets of objections” from residents in neighbouring streets.

The Guernsey Policy & Economics Group (GPEG) has issued a report on the island’s capital expenditure, and its first recommendation is to reduce the complexity of the approval and procurement processes.
The document notes that: ‘batting inordinately long papers between committees, deputies and the civil servants is clearly too ponderous, slow and expensive’.
GPEG is made up of leading financial figures such as Lord Digby Jones and Jon Moulton, and the report is upfront that it is not the be-all and end-all of capital expenditure.

Alongside a 1.99 per cent increase in council tax, the council is also proposing a £6.6m allocation for investment in Children’s Social Care, a three per cent levy specifically for Adult Social Care, £2.6m more for waste services, and reversing a planned £1m reduction in Public Health funding.
West Berkshire Council is planning to redevelop London Road Industrial Estate in Newbury Liberal Democrat politicians on West Berkshire Council have put the brakes on a major redevelopment project after they were kicked off the project board. They have decided to call-in the Conservative-run council’s decision to press ahead with the London Road Industrial Estate redevelopment and invest a further £345,000 to ensure a planning application can be drawn up. That means the council cannot continue with the project, which has been in the pipeline since 2003, until the decision has been debated by the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee in January.
