No matter how many times I do it, I still get a visceral thrill from boarding a ferry. There’s the pent-up excitement and anticipation of the journey ahead; the knowledge that there will be time to stop and take stock with a coffee on deck; the thrilling, heady scent of the sea. Some of my most treasured travel memories revolve around getting the ferry from Dover to Calais, of waving goodbye mentally to those legendary White Cliffs and preparing for a passage to the continent and a whirl of new experiences.
