Andy Ruiz defeats Chris Arreola by unanimous decision
In a matter of three fights, Andy Ruiz has gone from underdog, to champion, to disappointment, to a man in search of a comeback. But the comeback is off to a good start.
Ruiz (34-2, 22 KOs) recorded his first win in nearly two years on Saturday, as he defeated Chris Arreola (38-6-1, 33 KOs) via unanimous decision in a 12-round, non-title heavyweight bout. All three judges scored the fight, which took place at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, for Ruiz via scores of 118-109, 118-109 and 117-110.
It was an important night for Ruiz, 31, who upset Anthony Joshua to become the first Mexican heavyweight boxing champion in 2019, only to give his titles back in an immediate rematch. After his weight ballooned to 310 pounds following the loss, Ruiz teamed up with Canelo Alvarez and trainer Eddy Reynoso. He came into the fight 27 pounds lighter than his past fight.
Andy Ruiz is aiming for another world title, as well as a fight with Deontay Wilder. Ruiz and Wilder could be set to meet as the rest of the heavyweight division looks to keep themselves occupied while Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury attempt to find a way for their undisputed clash.

Former world heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr survived an early knockdown to beat Chris Arreola by unanimous decision in California.
Knocked down by an overhand right in the second round, Mexican Ruiz recovered to win 117-110, 118-109 and 118-109 on the judges scorecards.
He had not fought since his December 2019 rematch defeat by Anthony Joshua, after which he lost 55lb. We did what we had to do to get the victory, Ruiz, 31, said.

In his first fight since losing the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight belts to previous victim Anthony Joshua in December 2019, Ruiz was expected to return to winning ways with a minimum of fuss against Arreola. But the 40-year-old known as “The Nightmare” certainly made it a nightmare start for Ruiz.
After taking a jab to the stomach in round two, Arreola responded with a hefty right hand over the top that forced Ruiz to drop down to one knee.
