7 suspected cases at medical college
Two of seven persons admitted at the Kannur Government Medical College Hospital have shown all the symptoms of Mucormycosis, commonly called black fungus, a rare but serious infection caused by the fungus called mucormycete.
Black fungus cases have been reported from other districts in the State earlier, but no cases had been detected in Kannur and Kasaragod districts so far.
According to health officials at the medical college, the seven suspected cases of black fungus have been getting treated at the hospital for the past one week.

Court-martial proceedings have begun against Captain K.P.C. Reddy, a Naval officer working in the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, near here, who was involved in a vehicle accident in which a man was killed on January 12 last year.
The accident happened in Payyanur, when the car driven by Capt. Reddy hit the two-wheeler of Bhuvanchandran, 54, who was a resident of Kunneru, around 7.45 p.m. Bhuvanchandran suffered a severe head injury. Even though he was rushed to the Kannur Government Medical College Hospital after preliminary treatment in Payyanur, he died of his injuries the next day. Following the incident, the Payyanur police registered a case against the Naval officer.

A man and a woman, who reportedly self-immolated themselves in Payyannur, have died at the Kannur Government Medical College Hospital.
V.K. Sivaprasad, 28, who lived in a rented house near the Payyanur old bus stand and M.D. Arya, 21, a college student, died at the hospital.
According to the police, while Arya died on Monday night, Sivaprasad succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning. Both are suspected to have committed suicide.
The incident took place around 4 p.m. on Friday. The young man, who was an employee of a company in Payyanur in Kannur district, had been on leave for the past few days.
Transgender woman who contested in Kannur Corporation election ends life

AAA The only transgender, who contestant as independent candidate in the local election in the State died after she reportedly ended life in Kannur.
According to police, the deceased Sneha, a transgender woman, residing in the Samajwadi colony in Thottada, suffered burns while at her home and she died on the way to the hospital. Her body is kept at the Kannur Government Medical College Hospital. The incident took place on Tuesday evening.
Though the primary investigation concluded it as a suicide, more details would be revealed only after further investigation, police added.
