When the Majority Suffers: The Case for Intellectual Diversity on College Campuses

When the Majority Suffers: The Case for Intellectual Diversity on College Campuses When the Majority Suffers: The Case for Intellectual Diversity on College Campuses December 16, 2020 2020 has been a tumultuous year. Even without considering COVID-19, the internal strife within the United States is at its explosive peak. The two parties are raging against each other, families are split down the middle, and political disagreements have become dangerously redefined in moral terms that attack people’s characters rather than their reasoning.  Amidst this chaos, many college students are back at school. Much has been written about the contributions that colleges make to today’s polarization, particularly when ideological uniformity on campus leads to discrimination against those who disagree. And yes, when used as a tool for censorship, ideological homogeneity on college campuses is a destructive force against the political minority. Yet, at the same time, because they are consta

Echoes What the HEK? Published 12/16/2020

The Food and Drug Administration granted emergency authorization for the use of a COVID-19 vaccine produced by Pfizer and BioNTech on Dec. 11. Other products from Moderna and AstraZeneca are in the pipeline. All of these vaccines relied on a fetal cell line called HEK-293 for testing or production. Is this a reason not to use them? HEK-293 is a cell line that scientists refer to as immortal because it continues to divide and reproduce. It was derived from the kidney cells of an aborted fetus in 1973. Since then, it has propagated through multiple generations and been modified in many ways for specific applications. Today, it is widely used in biology experiments of all kinds.

NASA Releases Stunning Images of 30 Caldwell Objects | Astronomy

NASA has released more than 50 new Hubble images featuring 30 galaxies, star clusters, and nebulae. All of these objects belong to a collection known to astronomers as the Caldwell catalog. This Hubble images shows Caldwell 45, a spiral galaxy located 59 million light-years away in the constellation Boötes. Also known as NGC 5248, this galaxy is notable for the ring structure around its nucleus. These nuclear rings are characterized by hot spots of starburst activity. Caldwell 45 was discovered by astronomer William Herschel in 1784. The galaxy has an apparent magnitude of 10 and can be spotted using a small telescope, though it won’t appear very bright. A larger telescope is needed to make out the galaxy’s spiral arms. The best time of year to observe Caldwell 45 is during the northern hemisphere’s spring and the southern hemisphere’s autumn. This stunning image of Caldwell 45 is a composite of observations made by Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) and Wide Field and P

Is Christmas simply a re-imagining of ancient pagan celebrations?
