MASS FOR LIFE: Bishop David Bonnar of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will celebrate Mass for Life 10 a.m. today at St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St., Youngstown, which includes prayer for a greater respect for life at every stage and in every situation.
Expectant mothers, fathers and their families will be invited to receive a blessing for their unborn babies. The “Blessing of a Child in the Womb” was created to encourage prayer and recognition of the precious gift of the child in the womb and to foster respect for human life within society.
POVERTY AWARENESS: Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Youngstown is calling upon Catholics and others of good will to support a special collection to provide winter utility assistance to individuals and families in need. In conjunction with “Poverty Awareness Month,” Catholic Charities is sponsoring its annual “Warm Hearts for Warm Homes” campaign (formerly Keep the Kids Warm) today and Sunday.
YOUNGSTOWN In a year that brought many changes to the way people worshipped in local churches, the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown also was challenged by the death of Bishop George Murry on June 5.
Five months later and still in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic area Catholics celebrated as Pope Francis named David Bonnar as Murry’s successor on Nov. 17.
Murry died at 71 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York after battling acute leukemia for the past three years. He went into remission twice, but lost his battle on the third recurrence.
On May 26, the diocese announced Murry had submitted his resignation to Pope Francis. He died before the pope could approve his request.
For 40 years, Patsy Palombo lived a double life.
By day he was the director of development and stewardship with the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown.
At night he was the drummer for Left End, a rock act beloved and renowned for its live show and the outrageous antics of lead singer Dennis T. Menass (real name Dennis Sesonsky).
“I could be playing with Left End for a really rowdy rock crowd at the Arcade or another club in Youngstown or Warren, get home at 3:30 in the morning and then have a 9 a.m. meeting with the bishop and a group of priests,” Palombo said. Palombo, 69, tells the music side of that double life in his book “Tenacity: The Left End Story,” which he released in late November.
