Here are the latest local, regional and national headlines on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) for Thursday, May 6, 2021:
There have been 479,633 confirmed cases of COVID-19 across Ontario, an increase of 2,941 cases from the previous day. There have been 436,470 people recovered from the virus while 8,187 have died. The number of Ontario people tested is 14,310,628 of which 29,179 have pending results.
Canada’s coronavirus case total is 1,257,328. The country has 24,450 deaths from the virus – two in the Yukon, four in Nunavut, 1,594 in British Columbia (count dropped by three due to data correction by province), 2,102 in Alberta, 501 in Saskatchewan, 982 in Manitoba, 8,187 in Ontario, 10,964 in Quebec, 39 in New Brunswick, six in Newfoundland & Labrador and 69 in Nova Scotia.

School boards across the province which includes the ones right here in Cornwall and SDG will be receiving a total of $972.6 million for the 2021-22 school year, an overall increase of $18.1 million from the year prior, through the Grants for Student Needs (GSN) Program.
“Our government is committed to advancing student success, and we are delivering significant resources here in Stormont Dundas South Glengarry, and across the province to help young people reach their full potential,” said Stormont Dundas South Glengarry MPP Jim McDonell.

The area’s Catholic school board and teachers’ union have strongly spoken out against the provincial government’s online learning plan for the upcoming school year.
In a board meeting Tuesday evening, trustees with the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario spoke of their concern about the proposed plan. They passed a motion to send a letter to all MPPs, including Premier Doug Ford and Education Minister Stephen Lecce, expressing their concerns.

Earlier Tuesday, Lecce announced school boards would be required to offer virtual learning as an option for all students for the 2021-22 school year. The minister was sparse on details, only saying more information would come in the following months.

Cornwall’s Todd Lalonde has been elected to a fourth term as an Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association regional director.
Lalonde, the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario chair and Cornwall/Glengarry trustee, is the director for Region 10, which includes the CDSBEO, the Algonquin and Lakeshore CDSB, and the Renfrew County CDSB.

“I’ve served in the role for three consecutive terms, and I look forward to serving for a fourth term,” Lalonde said in a CDSBEO news release.
