Waterloo Region businesses could reopen again in middle of February

KITCHENER Businesses waiting for the green light from the province to reopen their doors may not have to wait much longer. With the Ontario government expected to announce plans to start reopening the economy on Monday, sources tell CTV News this could then start in some areas as early as next week. For Waterloo Region businesses, this could also mean reopening around the middle of February. Ryan Leandres, the owner of The Adventurers Guild Café in Kitchener, began strategising months ago on how to reopen his board game café safely. It was kind of an immediate process because I knew it would come down to this, he said. We immediately cut down our counter space in our main room to space out tables, we rethought the entire back area, and the back process of preparing food.

Quebec s struggling retailers hoping Legault s big announcement includes permission to re-open

MONTREAL With Quebec Premier Francois Legault planning to make a major announcement on Tuesday, the province s retailers are hoping that might include permission to re-open. “We really believe they re going to announce a re-opening of retail. We don t know if malls are going to re-open, but street front stores will re-open,” said Retail Council of Canada spokesperson Marc Fortin. According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses, 14 per cent of Montreal s small retailers, or almost 9,000 stores, are close to permanently closing. Fortin said the hope is that even if there are restrictions, allowing stores to re-open will save some.

City councillors say they are running out of time to introduce new small business tax rate in 2021

Published Monday, February 1, 2021 10:58AM EST Last Updated Monday, February 1, 2021 12:07PM EST A group of city councillors are pushing for the introduction of a new property tax subclass to support struggling small businesses but they say that they can’t do it without the province’s help. The Ford government announced in November that it would permit municipalities to reduce the cost of property taxes for small businesses but it has not yet released technical regulations that will lay out the parameters for the program and with Toronto council scheduled to approve their budget later this month, time is now running out for the city to provide the relief to businesses in 2021.
