Efforts to discredit climate journalists are condemned

Posted: Wednesday, January 27, 2021 12:25 The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) is defending journalists who cover climate issues from attempts to discredit them. Specifically, it targets a report paid for by the government of the province of Alberta which is mounting a vigorous and controversial defence of its oil industry. The report was prepared for the $3.5-million-dollar Journalists accused of distributing ‘propagandized climate change issues’ A New Global Paradigm: Understanding the Transnational Progressive Movement, the Energy Transition and the Great Transformation Strangling Alberta’s Petroleum Industry argues that journalists are part of a “disturbing” movement to “coordinate and effectively distribute propagandized climate change issues in their reporting.” The report criticizes prominent news media such as Maclean’s magazine, TVO as well as the CBC, and the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and National Post newspapers.

A veteran reporter who has worked for APTN, ichannel, VisionTV, CBC and CTV, among others, Pugliese currently teaches journalism at Ryerson University. She previously served as president of the Canadian Association of Journalists, and is a board member of Canadian Journalists for Free Expression. Pugliese is a citizen of the Pikwàkanagàn First Nation in Ontario and is of mixed Algonquin and Italian descent.
