Keystone cancellation highlights Trudeau s broken promise of a just transition

Back in 2019, just a few days after the September climate strikes brought millions of people to the streets, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stood before a crowd in Burnaby and laid out his party’s climate platform. Most of the speech was pretty standard: Liberal climate promises based on a vague pledge for more ambition and a contrast between its party and the Conservatives. But one promise stood out. A little over halfway through the speech, Trudeau said that “as we move Canada forward, we need to make sure no one gets left behind.” His solution? A “Just Transition Act, ensuring that workers have access to the training and support they need to succeed in the new clean economy.”

Methane emissions from abandoned oil and gas wells underestimated

CREDIT: Mary Kang A recent McGill study published in Environmental Science and Technology finds that annual methane emissions from abandoned oil and gas (AOG) wells in Canada and the US have been greatly underestimated – by as much as 150% in Canada, and by 20% in the US. Indeed, the research suggests that methane gas emissions from AOG wells are currently the 10 th and 11 th largest sources of anthropogenic methane emission in the US and Canada, respectively. Since methane gas is a more important contributor to global warming than carbon dioxide, especially over the short term, the researchers believe that it is essential to gain a clearer understanding of methane emissions from AOG wells to understand their broader environmental impacts and move towards mitigating the problem.

Canada plans to sell Keystone XL for scrap if Biden kills project

The Canadian province that invested $1.1 billion of taxpayers’ money in the controversial Keystone XL project is now considering the sale of pipe and materials to try to recoup some funds. “If the project ends, there would be assets that could be sold, such as enormous quantities of pipe,” Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said in a press conference Monday. “That would offset construction costs.” With Joe Biden set to be sworn in this week, the U.S. president-elect’s campaign promise to cancel the crude pipeline’s license is haunting the Canadian oil sands industry. The decision may come via executive action on his first day in office, CBC News reported on Sunday, citing people it didn’t identify.
