Trudeau asks Atlantic premiers to help with Ontario COVID-19 outbreak

  HALIFAX Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called on the Premiers of Atlantic Canada to help Ontario fight their third wave of COVID-19.  As COVID-19 cases surge in Toronto, and field hospitals are set to open, staff from Atlantic Canada and the territories are being called on to help as Ontario fights its third wave “We need ICU physicians, general internal medicine physicians, and nurses that can work in the ICU and emergency department,” says Dr. Lisa Salamon-Switzman of the Ontario Medical Association, adding that they also need respiratory therapists in addition to nurses and doctors. In a video posted to Twitter on Sunday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said federal departments and some Canadian provinces are working to send health-care workers and equipment to help Ontario as it battles record-breaking COVID-19 numbers

Residents of Waverley, N S senior care home forced to find new living arrangements in 30 days

  HALIFAX The Adelaide Senior Care Home in Waverley, N.S. wrote in a letter to families that they are permanently closing their doors. In the letter, the home says due to required renovations issued by the Halifax Regional Municipality that will cost upwards of $300-thousand, the home will be closing effective Feb. 28. The letter was sent to six full-time residents, leaving them 30 days to find a new home. “All those poor families,” said Bill Vangorder, the chief policy officer with the Canadian Association for Retired Persons (CARP). According to the home’s president, Jody Munn, some of the required renovations include a new sprinkler system, firewalls, fire doors, and additional fire exits.

Since at least 2016, officials with Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency have asked the owners of Adelaide Senior Care Home in Waverley, N.S., to update their building to meet the standards expected of a care home. Owner Jody Munn said the home hasn t turned a profit since he bought it in 2015, and the necessary upgrades aren t feasible.
