Union-backed Trudeau government rams through law to criminalize Montreal port strike
Justin Trudeau’s minority Liberal government, which has boasted of its “special partnership” with the trade unions since coming to power in 2015, is ramming through parliament a draconian law that will criminalize the strike 1,150 Port of Montreal dockers launched Monday morning.
The Liberals’ back-to-work law was adopted by the House of Commons in the early hours of Thursday morning thanks to the votes of the opposition Conservatives. It is set to be approved by the Senate and receive royal assent, making it law, later today.

Premier Doug Ford’s government was called on to pass a 14-day sick-leave motion, Bill 239. But the government voted against the measure aimed at supporting essential workers.
After voting down the proposed plan of 14 days, the government introduced legislation to require employers to provide three paid sick days for employees if they miss work due to COVID-19.

Union Denounces Bill to End Port of Montreal Strike – April 29, 2021
Michel Murray, a spokesperson for chapter 375 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), holds a news conference in Montreal to discuss the federal government’s back-to-work legislation to end the strike by dockworkers at the Port of Montreal. MPs voted to pass Bill C-29 to resume operations at the port, where more than 1,000 dockworkers went on strike on April 26. Bill C-29 now goes to the Senate and it may go into effect as early as May 1 if the Upper Chamber approves the legislation as expected. The dockworkers’ union says it will contest the legislation, which it says is unconstitutional, and has filed complaints with the International Labour Organization. The federal government says the strike is disrupting supply chains that have already been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. (no interpretation)
