Union Denounces Bill to End Port of Montreal Strike – April 29, 2021 Michel Murray, a spokesperson for chapter 375 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), holds a news conference in Montreal to discuss the federal government’s back-to-work legislation to end the strike by dockworkers at the Port of Montreal. MPs voted to pass Bill C-29 to resume operations at the port, where more than 1,000 dockworkers went on strike on April 26. Bill C-29 now goes to the Senate and it may go into effect as early as May 1 if the Upper Chamber approves the legislation as expected. The dockworkers’ union says it will contest the legislation, which it says is unconstitutional, and has filed complaints with the International Labour Organization.
