Can state police help put a lid on violent crime in Providence? Patrick Anderson, The Providence Journal © [The Providence Journal, file / Steve Szydlowski] Manni The last place where Rhode Island State Police sent troopers to help local officers fight crime was Block Island. It was late last summer and two fatal motor vehicle crashes on the island in one week prompted then-Gov. Gina Raimondo to tap a federal law enforcement program to deploy troopers on the island for enhanced traffic enforcement. Now Gov. Dan McKee s offers to use that same program, called the Neighborhood Response Team, to counter a spate of shootings in Providence, has become a political debate.
