US President Joe Biden’s climate summit kicks off on Thursday with hopes of securing pledges from dozens of world leaders on cutting heat-trapping gas emissions and curbing global warming.
Mr Biden is expected to unveil new carbon dioxide emission targets as part of the two-day virtual Leaders Summit on Climate and to pledge money to help smaller economies fight climate change and adapt to a warmer planet.
The US also wants its guests to follow suit and scale up plans for cutting pollution and preventing future climate-related challenges. China, Russia, Canada, India, Germany, the UK, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and other big economies are among those attending the summit.
Biden says he’ll send vaccines overseas but only after U.S. supply is sufficient

WASHINGTON President Joe Biden said the U.S. wants to share coronavirus vaccines with other countries but won’t begin sending doses abroad until it has sufficient supply at home.
“We’re looking at what is going to be done with some of the vaccines that we are not using. We’ve got to make sure they are safe to be sent,” Biden said at the White House Wednesday. “And we hope to be able to be of some help and value to countries around the world.”

Washington: Scott Morrison has told a summit of world leaders that Australia is on a pathway to achieve net zero emissions as he hit out at carbon taxes for destroying industries and eliminating jobs.
Suggesting that other countries may make impressive climate pledges while failing to deliver on them, Morrison said the international community could rely on Australia because it only made âbankableâ promises on emissions reduction.

The beginning of the summit, which is being held virtually, was marred by technical glitches. Morrisonâs microphone was muted for the early part of his speech, meaning those watching could not make out what he was saying.

President Joe Biden on Thursday kicked off a virtual climate summit attended by 40 other world leaders by announcing an ambitious cut in greenhouse gas emissions as he looks to put the US back at the center of the global effort to address the climate crisis and curb carbon emissions.
At the White House summit, which is taking place on Thursday and Friday, Biden committed the United States to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 50%-52% below its 2005 emissions levels by 2030. While the goals are a part of the Paris climate agreement that Biden rejoined upon taking office, they are non-binding and the administration has not rolled out a plan on how the US will meet them.
