The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has acknowledged the plea from Kanawha County in West Virginia regarding reports of an HIV outbreak in the area.

In a public letter addressed to W. Kent Carper, president of the Kanawha County Commission, CDC director for National Center for HIV/AIDS Jonathan Mermin stated that it welcomes the opportunity to work with Carper, the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department and the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health in response efforts.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. Health officials once again urged young people in West Virginia to get the COVID-19 vaccine as cases rise increase in that population demographic.
According to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR)’s COVID-19 figures from Friday, the age groups of 10-19 (19.53%) and 20-29 (17.86%) have recorded the most virus cases in the state since March 19.
In the state’s most populous county, Kanawha County, the 10-19 age group have recorded the most virus cases in the past three weeks at over 19%, ahead of 40-49 (17.82%) and 20-29 (16.47%). Dr. Sherri Young, health officer and executive director of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department (KCHD) said fewer cases among the older population are likely due to vaccination efforts.
