Crisis Pregnancy Center Advertising Targeted by Pending Legislation in State Legislature May 13, 2021 A bill that would ban what abortion rights advocates describe as deceptive advertising at crisis pregnancy centers is waiting for a vote on the House floor after passing the Senate 21-15 on May 5th. The legislation has faced bipartisan opposition, with Sen. Cathy Osten, D-Sprague, and two other Democrats joining the Republicans to vote against the legislation. The proposal has been considered by legislators in four previous legislative sessions, most recently passing the Health Committee and House, but dying without a vote in the Senate in 2019.  Supporters of the proposal argue that “limited services pregnancy centers,” which do not offer referrals for abortion or emergency contraception, masquerade as comprehensive medical facilities, luring pregnant women in an effort to dissuade them from abortions. Tong, state AGs call for tougher monitoring of forever chemicals

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong this week joined with his counterparts in 19 other states calling on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to step up monitoring of public drinking water systems for PFAS substances, which have been classified as especially resilient “forever chemicals.” In comments submitted to EPA officials on Tuesday, the state attorneys general asked for closer monitoring of 29 per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds, which have come under increased scrutiny in recent years after being linked to illnesses such as thyroid disease and some cancers.

Courtesy of Pixabay / Pixabay Connecticut Attorney General William Tong and 19 state attorneys general backed the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to strengthen monitoring of public water systems for PFAS chemicals. The EPA will require public water systems to monitor for 29 PFAS or chemicals for contamination in public water supplies. Tong said once testing and reporting is in place, there needs to be cleanup and “aid to communities most impacted by these dangerous forever chemicals.” There is no national requirement that all public water systems test for and remove unsafe levels of PFAS in drinking water. The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) is proposing a $30 million fine against Eversource and a $2.1 million fine to United Illuminating. The proposal comes a week after PURA released its final reports on an investigation into the companies’ response during last year’s storm. Tropical Storm Isaias left over 1 million residents and businesses without power for an extended period at the same time as a global pandemic and a summer heatwave.
