A sort of pep rally welcomed students as they arrived at Southwest Elementary School.
The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha came together to encourage and cheer on the students for their first day of in-person class in a year. I m excited about that pep rally! I hope the students feel a lot of joy, Durham School Board Chair Bettina Umstead said. I know there s some anxiousness about returning to in-person learning, but I hope that while seeing all these caring adults there ll be some joy about returning to school.
But the Alpha Phi Alpha brothers went one step further; they recognized a pair of teachers, Antoinette Tate and Katie Kizzy, and gave them gifts to use to enhance their classrooms.
When students in Cumberland County schools walk into classrooms Monday, it will be a year and a day since Gov. Roy Cooper ordered schools across the state to close because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This time, students will be wearing masks, and teachers will make sure they don t get too close to each other.
Here are five things to know about the reopening of schools.
1. How it works
Cumberland County is offering two different ways for students to attend classes: fully virtual and blended.
The virtual option allows the students to keep attending classes online. Under the blended learning format , not everyone will be in school all at once. Students will be broken up into two cohorts, A and B, that will flip-flop what days they re at the schools.
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) With students returning to the classroom for the first time in nearly a year, Cumberland County Schools gave media outlets a tour of one of the elementary schools that is prepared for the start of Plan B.
Principal Letreicia Allen, with W.H. Owen Elementary School, laid out the format of how staff will process students on a day-to-day basis.
First, parents and students will fill out a survey on their assigned days: for Cohort A, it s Monday and Tuesday, while Cohort B is scheduled for Thursday and Friday.
If they don t complete the survey before arriving on-site, there will be picket signs placed on the school lawn with a QR code for them to do so.
