Newton Rigg chiefs face grilling by MPs Newton Rigg Education chiefs who decided to close Newton Rigg College will face a grilling from MPs later this month at a Parliamentary inquiry. Bosses from Askham Bryan, which announced it was closing the land-based education campus near Penrith last year, will be called as witnesses on Tuesday, March 23 in front of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee. The committee will hold the one-off session on land-based education, with a focus on Newton Rigg and witnesses called to appear include Dr Tim Whitaker, chief executive officer of Askham Bryan and its director of governance Judith Clapham.

Penrith bar and hotel s plan to expand given green light

The Lounge and the Herald in Penrith Plans for a popular Penrith hotel and bar to expand have been given the go-ahead by Eden Council. Mark Bowman, of RHM (Cumbria) Ltd, will expand the Lounge Hotel on King Street, and increase its bar facilities and accommodation offer by linking through the party wall into a neighbouring building to the rear of the our sister title’s Cumberland & Westmorland Herald’s office. While the Cumberland & Westmorland Herald remains based at the King Street premises, the buildings to the rear of the site are no longer used by the company. The owner took the decision to sell the whole site and the front of the building was then leased back to the Herald by the new owner.

Proposals to turn former Penrith newspaper offices into drinking establishment with hotel rooms

PROPOSALS to turn former newspaper offices into a drinking establishment have been lodged.  Eden District Council has received plans for the former offices of The Cumberland & Westmoreland Herald on King Street, Penrith. According to the design and access statement: Since the newspaper ceased to manufacture and distribute the newspaper from the premises the buildings to the rear of the sales and administrative offices are no longer required. It is proposed to create bar and eating spaces with associated food reparation, storage, toilet accommodation and additional hotel bedrooms.  These can all be accommodated within the existing redundant herald office buildings.
