Yesterday, SPACE on Ryder Farm, the artist residency program and organic farm located in Brewster, New York, announced the participants for its 2021 residency season.
The SPACE team is thrilled that residents will once again be welcomed to Ryder Farm, bringing the organization’s creative spirit back to life. SPACE has spent the past year preparing for a residency program that is safe, productive and restorative, with the hope that time on the farm will give artists and innovators time and space to get back to their vital creative work. Rich Kids: A History of Shopping Malls in Tehran very much in the theatre as exploration of ideas camp, and it does so very well. I hesitate to even call it a play in any traditional sense. Is it an experience? An interaction? Whatever it is, it is definitely a glorious surprise.
Honestly, I have found myself feeling less than excited about viewing theatre online the past year. For me, it so often highlights the fact that we can t all be in a room together creating and sharing stories instead of giving me the booster shot of theatre that I need and love. As the world has now officially crossed over the one-year mark of a global pandemic, nothing and everything feels like it’s changed. Time has flown by, yet we continue to make memes about it still being March 2020. We acknowledge the increase in burnout and screen fatigue, yet we continue to turn to our devices to stay connected to others.
The perception of time is just one of many themes pulled apart and put back together in The Javaad Alipoor Company’s production of “Rich Kids: A History of Shopping Malls in Tehran.” This installment of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company’s 2020-2021 season is fast-paced, chaotic, and chock full of statistics on consumerism, climate change, and globalization that seemingly seek to shock the viewer into questioning existence, as an individual and a society.
