Budget cuts for most of the government coming due to Covid

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) has issued a circular on the revision and strengthening of the national budget expenditures in 2021 because the lockdown measures in some geographical areas are having a general impact on the 2021 National budget framework.
According to the ministry, this crisis requires the government to reconsider some of its planned expenditures to save money in order to divert funds to address its current priorities in combating the spread of Covid-19 and counteracting the negative socio-economic impact on Cambodia.

With the Kingdom continuing to grapple with the ongoing community outbreak of Covid-19, the government has introduced a series of measures to contain the pandemic, from curfew and inter-provincial travel ban to a lockdown of the entire capital.
The restrictions, however, couldn’t seem to deter some people from venturing out, prompting the government to designate some Covid-19 hotspots in Phnom Penh as Red Zones, where residents are forbidden from leaving their homes.
But despite the designation, some residents were still seen roaming the streets, pushing the local authorities to take the matter into their own hands and turn to their last resort: sticks.

Residents applaud gov t aid initiative amid lockdown

Phnom Penh residents and analysts welcomed the government’s shift from financial support to groceries for poor people in the lockdown area of Phnom Penh and Takmao after confusion.
Prime Minister Hun Sen made a change on April 20 to the government support programme during the lockdown.
The government was initially providing 300,000 riel ($75) payments to those affected, but now instead they are providing an increased amount of food assistance such as rice, canned fish, noodles and soy sauce.
A resident of Sen Sok district said on the condition of anonymity that the authorities had brought food assistance to her village on April 20, but she rejected it because she and many other people in the village expected a 300,000 riel payment like Prime Minister Hun Sen had announced recently.

PM: Civil servants who refuse jab risk losing jobs

Any civil servants who decline to be vaccinated against Covid-19 may risk losing their jobs due to colleagues’ concerns about interacting closely with those who remain unprotected, Prime Minister Hun Sen warned.
In an audio message on April 6, Hun Sen elaborated that those who had not been vaccinated were at higher risks of contracting the novel coronavirus and transmitting it to others.
The prime minister said that with vaccinations being administered to civil servants at the national and sub-national levels in recent days, he had noticed two types of people.
