Mount Vernon s city comptroller insisted just last month she had complied with a court order to pay outstanding bills to two of the city s fuel vendors - but the Mount Vernon Police Department says it s still dealing with a low supply of gas.
According to Police Commissioner Glenn Scott, the police department was reduced to a ration system to procure fuel for police vehicles.
He says, temporary arrangements had been made at a local gas station for refueling.”
City Comptroller Deborah Reynolds blames Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard, saying it s her job to order fuel for Mount Vernon s Department of Public Works, police and fire departments.
The federal funds are expected in the city starting this month with the first $21 million. Another $21 million would be available in May 2022.
The City Council and the Board of Estimate & Contract approved the measure in recent weeks to keep the money out of the hands of Comptroller Deborah Reynolds, who they blame for a lack of fiscal transparency, failure to pay vendors and refusal to accept state and federal aid.
Lawrence, a former candidate for Congress who headed the city’s charter revision commission last year, is running in the June 22 Democratic primary for comptroller.
The others on the ballot are the Rev. Darren Morton, Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard’s chief of staff, and Council President Marcus Griffith. Richard Thomas, the former mayor, is also running but was barred from the ballot due to invalidated nominating signatures. He has until Monday to appeal the decision but has also said he is considering waging a write-in campaign.
