Teachers union backs Stringer in crucial nod for mayoral campaign
underperforming in early polls.
The nod from the United Federation of Teachers was more or less expected following the union’s final forum this month. Members told POLITICO it was between Stringer and former City Hall attorney Maya Wiley. But with the backing of the 200,000-member union as well as the endorsement of the Working Families Party last week, Team Stringer is getting a welcome boost as it heads into the final two months before the Democratic primary.

The United Federation of Teachers, which represents teachers in New York City, is preparing to endorse a candidate for mayor. Members of the union’s Delegate Assembly, the 3,200-member union-wide body, will vote on a candidate to endorse this afternoon.
Nearly one in four active Democratic voters age 50 and older ranked him first, with Adams and Stringer “in a dead heat” behind him, according to the survey. Former Citigroup executive Ray McGuire was listed first by 9% of Democratic voters.
