At the end of May, the remains of 215 children were found at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. Last week, another 751 unmarked graves were found at Marieval Indian Residential School. When I read these numbers, I feel a lot of emotions â sadness, grief, anger, disgust, frustration â but one thing I havenât yet felt is surprise. Yet, so many people have expressed shock at these findings â and thatâs really gotten me thinking. I didnât learn about residential schools until I went to university. I went to Algoma University, so I was confronted with that part of our past almost immediately. I then completed my undergraduate and masterâs degree in history, with a focus on indigenous-settler relations, so I ultimately became quite familiar with what happened at the schools.
