For a few years now I tried my hand at New Year predictions for Utah and for the first time I’m proud to say my record wasn’t great.
If I had predicted an earthquake, hurricane-force winds, a president who broke democracy, and a global pandemic that killed thousands, then I would have clearly been dabbling in the black arts.

Weeks before the November election, a Utah agency leased 33 units of land to mineral and hydrocarbon companies.
The offerings are a routine practice for the Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA), which uses the money raised to help fund public schools. But environmentalists criticized the October sale’s inclusion of four oil-gas leases in San Juan County that overlap with the boundaries of Bears Ears National Monument, as they were designated by President Barack Obama in 2016, and could potentially complicate a future land exchange.

Water rights. Tribes have made a lot of legal headway in establishing claims to water rights, including those from the Tohono OâOdham, the Gila River Indian Community and several other Arizona tribes. But other claims are yet unfulfilled.

Sen. Mitt Romney has burned a lot of bridges with the hardcore Utah Republican crowd, from his vote to impeach President Donald Trump on down to this post-election criticism of the president.
