Last fall, I gave a Zoom lecture to a class of undergraduate students at the University of Puget Sound about the path forward on energy and climate justice. I always go into these presentations with some trepidation, because I know that many young people are overwhelmed by despair about climate change, and I want to be clear about what s at stake without adding to their anxiety. After I finished, one of the students offered a simple appreciation that lifted a weight off my shoulders: Honestly, this presentation has been a relief. I feel so much better. Thank you.

That’s why he was pleased Thursday to learn Rep. Deb Haaland, D-N.M., will be nominated by President-elect Joe Biden as the first Native American to lead the Interior Department.
After all, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, located within the department, answers to the person sitting in the secretary’s chair.

We now know the core group of people who will implement President-elect Joe Biden’s climate agenda. While Biden has promised an all-of-government approach (and he should certainly do that), the leaders of the agencies with the biggest say on climate and environmental rule making and R&D are set.

President-elect Joe Biden’s likely pick for Interior Secretary is New Mexico Representative Deb Haaland (D-NM).

Haaland, first elected to Congress in 2018, was one of four contenders for the role besting three fellow New Mexicans: Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich along with former Obama Interior Deputy Secretary Michael Conner. Without a doubt, Haaland’s nomination to the post is historic. If confirmed, she would be the first Native American Interior Secretary in department history. But how does she stand on the issues? And if Republicans maintain control of the U.S. Senate, what’s the likelihood of her confirmation?
