Education Minister: Adjusting CSEC, CAPE would be hard

EDUCATION Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly has said the recommendations made by the United Nations Children s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to make adjustments for students sitting CSEC and CAPE exams would be difficult to adopt.
Gadsby-Dolly said the Caribbean Examinations Council CXC has said to adopt the recommendations made by the Caribbean Union of Teachers and supported by UNICEF would incur significant costs and push the exams back to a July 26 start.
In a text message on Wednesday the minister said, “This is viewed by most countries as difficult due to the domino effect it would have on the release of results and students matriculation into universities, Form Six etc.”

The two main teachers’ trade unions are banking on the expression of concern from UNICEF about this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) to push the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) to reform the exams as they have been prescribing for more than a year.
The Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU) on Tuesday noted that while Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw has recently been advocating for much-needed adjustments to the structure of this year’s exams, she has failed to attract the support of her regional counterparts.
A combination of the continued challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic within the region and the volcanic eruption in St. Vincent has resulted in the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) taking the decision to push back its suite of exams by two weeks.
