COVID-19 restrictions remain in place as numbers rise in Blackfeet Country

“We’re having another potential outbreak,” Public Information Officer James McNeely said of the COVID-19 situation on the Blackfeet Reservation. “It’s hard to say where it came from; it’s been a month since Thanksgiving, and Christmas was just last week.” McNeely said Incident Command thought it would be possible to move into Phase 2 of reopening up until the latest numbers came out. He said officials are waiting for three consecutive weeks of low numbers to make such a move, and so far that hasn’t happened. “We’re not out of the woods yet so we need to continue to follow the rules,” he said.

As Native American tribes are sovereign nations, they and their health care providers have the option to receive COVID-19 vaccines through state or federal channels.  The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Blackfeet Nation and Little Shell Tribe elected to receive their allocations through the state. All five of the state s urban Indian health centers and all Indian Health Service (IHS) sites chose to receive their allocation from IHS, a federal agency, according to the governor s office.
