The grave Nunes visited is in the cemetery’s old section, as she called it. It’s located on the east side along the stone wall near one of the Route 6 entrances. There is a nearby gateway where those setting up camp in the cemetery enter, Nunes witnessed.
Who monitors St. Mary s Cemetery?
St. Mary’s Cemetery is owned by the Fall River Diocese and is not under the authority of the City of New Bedford. This limits what actions police can or cannot take on the grounds, said New Bedford Police public information officer Melissa Batchilder.
Officers cannot move them along unless the diocese wants them removed, Batchilder said.

NEW BEDFORD While visiting her father s grave on the anniversary of his death, Heidi Nunes thought others who happened to be on the St. Mary’s Cemetery grounds would be respectful, but that was not the case.
Nunes’ visit was disrupted when another woman entered the cemetery, walked over to a tree less than 20 feet away from Nunes, pulled down her jeans and urinated against the tree. Nunes shot a video of the incident and verbally chastised the woman.
Nunes said there is a group of panhandlers near the Route 6 entrance to the cemetery who camp out on the cemetery grounds, leaving bedding and trash behind and engaging in inappropriate behavior.
