Black Lives Matter UK has announced it is giving £600,000 in funding to grassroots groups across the country, including those that organised last summerâs anti-racism protests.
The campaign group received £1.2m in donations via a GoFundMe appeal, following widespread protests last summer.
BLMUK is awarding the funds in two phases. The first round has seen just over £169,500 given in small grants to 14 organisations that work to âimprove Black peopleâs lives in a racist societyâ and that the campaign group has worked with over the last five years.
The largest recipient of the first round of funding is the United Friends and Families Campaign, which has received £45,000 to set up a âpeopleâs tribunalâ for deaths in custody. Other organisations include the groups behind last summerâs protest, All Black Lives, Justice for Black Lives, and A Tribe Named Athari.
Sisters, where there is cold silence
no hallelujahs, no hurrahs at all, no handshakes,
no neon red or blue, no smiling faces
prevail.
The poem is a call to persevereâeven in the face of hardship and discrimination. But it is also a celebration. âYou create and train your flowers still,â Brooks wrote. The world can be cruel, but still, we rise.
And so while women have been raised to be competitive with one anotherârooted in the lie that there isnât room for all of us to succeedâBlack women understand the power of collaboration, motivation, and support. You ever noticed the pure excitement of a Black woman when one of her sisters succeeds? There is something so empowering about hearing a compliment from another Black woman. Itâs the hype track to unlocking our powerâa sisterhood in action.
New Balance Black History Month Collection: Release Details
We Spoke to the Creatives Behind New Balance’s “My Story Matters” Campaign
New Balance
Like many sportswear brands, New Balance is commemorating Black History Month with the release of a footwear and apparel collection. What sets this collection apart from the rest, however, is that it was conceived, designed, and executed entirely by a BIPOC team.
The project is part of the brand’s “My Story Matters” campaign, which is supported by two of New Balance’s top ambassadors in Jaden Smith and professional tennis player Coco Gauff and will be released on February 15.
